REVIEW OF OPERATIONS

KEEPING MEN ON RIGHT LINES

"Every effort is made to advise exservicemen along the right lines to help them into the right channels," stated the report of the trade training section, presented to Monday's meeting o€ the Auckland Rehabilitation 'Committee. It showed that at present there were twelve trainee vacancies in various trades. "Since the commencement of the Rehabilitation Department's trade training scheme in Auckland 71 men have been trained in the welding centre," said the report. "The class at present in session, which will be the last, has a full complement of eight trainees. The capentry trade, which has proved very popular among returned servicemen, still continues to attract applications far in excess of the number required for each class, which has a limit of 25 trainees. There are now two carpentry training centres in Auckland, known officially as Nos. 3 and 9. The latter centre will open its first class on February 19. "Additional instructors have, been appointed to cope with the extra work involved by the opening of the second school. The training term has been extended by one year for those who wish to gain a wider experience in the trade, particularly in speed. Up to the present date 100 carpenters have been trained since the inception of the carpentry trade centre In Auckland. It is safe to state that 96 per cent have remained in the trade. There are 90 men under training at present in the carpentry school." Sixty men are under training with private empiovers, who receive subsidies amounting to 50, 30, 20 and 10 per cent on gross wages, continued the report. The trades represented-number 31. In addition 15 applications are under consideration in 32 trades. Thirty-two applicants for trade training in various trades were unsuccessful, mainly on account of ineligibility. There had been 55 apprenticeships revived under the Suspension of Apprenticeship Emergency Regulations, 1944. At present a further six applications were under consideration, the report added.
