THE EXCEPTION AND RULE
A correspondent, 8.H.G., says "Calls to mind" and "proves" are interchangeable. This is not so, ana a rule of manners, behaviour, or custom is a convention, not a rule.. The existence of a rule depends on the canons of proof, as is presupposed in the expression "The exception proves the rule." I agree witn your correspondent, J. Buchan, that the expression is a fallacy, for an exception can only limit the scope oi a rule's application—but can anyone say how such a mistake, certainly seriously used sometimes, originated. Perhaps this would be the key to arrest the error. C. BELTON.
