THE OLD MILL
The proposal before the City Council to remove the Old Flour Mill to . another site is not only a foolish,; waste of money, but as an experi- ; enced old builder allow me to say it is impracticable. The engineer pointed out that there is a loss of 20 per cent in pulling down and rebuilding brickwork. The engineer must have been thinking of ordinary brickwork. In this case I doubt if you could save 20 per cent of the bricks, and all the mortar would have to be new. I have closely inspected this mill. The late Mr. Par : tington took me up through the dark, musty, fusty hole to the top. The bricks were burned on the site before the Maori War; they are quite different to the present-day brick. Why should good material and labour be wasted when houses are so scarce and the city rates so high? The proposal should receive short shrift by the council. OLD AUCKLAND BUILDER.
