TERM IN PRISON

ANOTHER BOOKMAKER

POLICE WARNINGS IGNORED

Another bookmaker was given a terra of imprisonment to-day. He was Norman Landale Tremain (52), who, when he appeared before.Mr. j> Morling, S.M., in the Police Court, pleaded guilty ':o a chai'ge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Mr. J. Terry represented Tremain.

Detective-Sergeant Trethewey said Tremain had for some time been accepting bets in the bar of a city hotel. He had been repeatedly warned about bookmaking, as late as Saturday last. However, he did not cease and yesterday he was arrested by Detective W. A. Mahood. He had £61 in his possession, but no betting material. Last year Tremain was fined £8 for laying totalisator odds.

Mr. Terry said Tremain only took small bets from people in the bar who were obliged to work, but were interested in the i~ces. Tremain was in ill health and was incapable of doing manual work. Two of his sons were in the Army, one being overseas. "It was only the economic necessity that has urged him to carry on, but he will now give it up," concluded Mr. Terry.

The magistrate said that if ill health was to be an excuse for committing an offence then it would be impossible toj enforce the law. Tremain had been convicted last year and had several warnings recently. Mr. Morling * dried that he would take counsel's plea into consideration and would not impose a substantial penalty.

Tremain was sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
