MAORI BY-ELECTION
ASPIRANTS FOR SEAT P.A. NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. Considerable interest is being taken by Taranaki Maoris in the selection of the Labour party's candidate to contest the Western Maori by-election. Athough 14 names were originally submitted by the Maori Labour committees throughout the electorate, it if understood that the number of aspirants for the candidature has now been reduced to three, Messrs. Matiu Ratana, of Wanganui, who is the youngest son of the founder of the Ratana movement and a brother of the late Mr. W. T. Ratana, M.P., Captain Werohia, of Tauranea, who is Maori liaison officer for the Waikato, and served with the Maori Battalion, and Mr. Hekenui Whakarake, of Wanganui.
No indication is available as to whom the National party will nominate for the by-election, but it is considered certain that the Opposition will have a candidate in the field.
