PRESERVATIVE IN MEAT
ANSWER TO WOMEN'S PROTEST
<P.A.) DUNEDIN, Friday. Allegations at the conference of the National Council of Women that excessive use of preservatives was made in meat sold by butchers was denied by city .retailers, wha stated that this was strictly controlled by the Health Department's officer. This Department stated that a small quantity of sulphur dioxide was used in sausages and other small goods, but no preservative was permitted in other meat. Most butchers had cool chambers.
The matter arose from the allegation by Mrs. Mathin, of Wanganui, who said that practically all meat was tampered with, and the preservative was a kind of poison which was the cause of the increase in cancer in the Dominion. As a result a remit was passed urging the Minister to ensure that the Act was rigidly enforced:
