OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM
Up till last year I was in charge of a country school and every Monday morning at assembly we sang "God Defend New Zealand" and followed it up with "God Save the King." Whenever we held a school concert proceedings were opened with the singing of our own national song and closed with "God Save the King." Neither children nor audience found any difficulty in the singing of "God Defend New Zealand," which in my opinion is a splendid song for chorus singing, with very appropriate words. I have never claimed anything but a strong dislike for. the words of "God Save the King." As far as-1 know it is the only national anthem which lauds an individual instead of the people or the country. In any case "God Defend New Zealand" is our own national song, and as we are an independant part of the British Commonwealth of nations let us haVe our own national song more often: NEW ZEALANDER.
