HOURS OF PARLIAMENT
SHORT AND LONG WEEKS
SITTING HOURS UNCHANGED
(By Tclcsraph.—Parliamentary Reporter)
WELLINGTON, this day
To overcome certain transport difficulties the House of Representatives has decided on an alteration in its sittings days to provide for alternate short and long weeks. It was explained by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, in the House this morning that the Whips on both sides had endeavoured to ascertain the wishes of members, and that he had conferred with the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Holland. The House adopted without discussion a motion by the Prime Minister that after the adjournment at 5.30 p.m. to-day the House would adjourn until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, and would then continue its sittings on Thursday and Friday, observing the usual hours. In the following week the House would meet at 2.30 p.m. on Monday, August 7, sitting on every day up to Friday, inclusive. In the week after the House would meet on Wednesday, and so on. The Prime Minister said the arrangements would not involve a reduction of sitting hours each fortnight.
