Grand National Rehearsal

NOKO BRACKET

IN HOMEBY STEEPLES RICCARTON RACE PROSPECTS (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A maximum field of eight will be available for the Homeby Steeplechase at Riccarton to-mOrrow, when the Christchurch Hunt Club will hold its first meeting since 1942, but it includes fancied Grand National candidates in Noko and Anglo-French, which form a bracket, and Khurja. Two of the acceptors, Surpeen and As Required, may not be at their best. Surpeen is apparently affected in the wind, and the affliction has become more pronounced since he has been at Riccarton, while As Required has a leg that has been giving trouble. Khurja will be tackling the course for the first time, but his record of two firsts and a second in the three steeplechases he has contested suggests that it will not trouble him. The Southland stablemates, Noko and Anglo-French, look certain to run well, with Noko appealing as the better prospect to-morrow. Kanui Te Pai has been schooling attractively and may take part in the finish, while Dozie Boy and Slayer have been to the fore in many tests on the course. Winter Cup horses will have a chance to prove themselves in the seven furlong Brabazon Handicap, which may have to be run in divisions, though three scratchings will bring the field to 32— the safety limit. At least a. dozen of the candidates look prospects, among them Royal Flight, Bashful Lady, Lord Advocate, Gulf Stream, Gamble, Prince Shad, Immediate, Aurora Australis, Lenardo and Sell's P3I. The Maiden Stakes has had to' be divided into three divisions and unless there are five scratchings three divisions will be run.
