RAID ON CAROLINES
Hundred Tons Of Explosive Dropped On Truk N.Z. Press Association —Copyright Rec. 2 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. The heaviest series of raids yet made by South-west Pacific Command bombers on Japanese bases in the Carolines is reported by General Mac Arthur's communique to-day. More than 100 tons of explosives were dropped on Truk, while other atolls raided included Woleai, Yap and Nomol. Several grounded aircraft were destroyed and nine Japanese fighters were shot down in combat. Another was probably destroyed. Off Biaki Island, Dutch New Guinea, Allied light naval units sank three barges laden with enemy personnel and supplies. , _ Navy Venturas attacked Ocean and Nauru Islands and also enemy positions in thd Marshalls, says a Pacific Fleet communique.
