LONG SHIPPING SERVICE

The well-known Auckland sportsman, Mr. Alfred Ernest Jaggs, ot Claremont Street, off Khyber 1 ass Road, died last night at the age of 68. As aiyoung man, Mr*.-Jaggs was a prominent LQTig'-clistance runner, ancl he continued to take an interest in athletics all his life. He was a keen football player, and later refereed both Rugby and Rugby League golfer, he was elected the first president of the Akarana Club when it was formed in 1927. He followed boxing and wrestling with keen interest, and for many yearas had not missed a match at the I own Hall where he always occupied the same seat and was well known to patrons. He was the donor of a number of sporting trophies. ' Mr. Jaggs was also well known m shipping and waterfront circles in Auckland, where he was in business for 40 years. He was with the New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, and later joined Nearing and Company, remaining to work for the Auckland Stevedoring Company, Limited, when it took over the former concern. Although he had not been in the best of health for some months, Mr. Jaggs continued working until two days before his death, being taken to hospital on Anzac Day. T , Born in Auckland, Mr. Jaggs lived here all his life, with the exception of two or three years-spent in Waitara on New Zealand Shipping Company business. He was first president of the Auckland Tally Clerks Union. ... A man of kindly disposition, he was well-known for his generous acts. He was a prominent member of the Church of England, and was a lay reader. A service will be held at the Epiphany Church, Karangahape Road, to-morrow afternoon, after which the funeral will leave for Waikumete Cemetery.
