VACATION WORK
STUDENTS COMPLAIN
"MANY PROMISES NOT KEPT" (P.A.) DUNEDIN, this day. The principal of the Dunedin Training College reported to the Education Board to-day on complaints from students concerning the conditions of their employment when manpowered during the vacation.
It was stated that many promises relating to conditions had not been kept and that satisfactory conditions were obtained only under pressure One case cited was of four girl students who were sent to a country hotel ostensibly as waitresses, housemaids and second cooks to work a 4 ihourweek, with one and a hall days off. They worked from ten to fifteen hours daily and were asked to sign a wages book that eight hours had been worked and paid for. The whole staff of the hotel was six and the average guests numbered 40. The report was referred to the manpower director for investigation.
