Recent arrivals in Chungking from Shanghai report that a sort of appeasement policy is going on there because the educated Japanese are beginning to think that the war is lost, says the New York Times Chungking correspondent. It is significant that Japanese shopkeepers are wearing Chinese dress and making friends with the Chinese on the basis of "We will help you now if you help us later." Recently the Japanese tested public opinion by showing old and new newsreels. The audience enthusiastically applauded British and American soldiers in the newsreel showing the fighting in Europe and the Far East, but the picture showing the Nanking puppet Premier Wang Ching-wei was received in silence.
