COMMITTEES ELECTED

TEMPERANCE SUCCESSES

L A feature of the licensing polls 3 held in Auckland yesterday was that 1 temperance candidates gained con--1 trol of the Remuera and Marsden t committees. In other licensing districts temperance candidates were returned, but in the Auckland dis- ; trict, where most interest was shown, : the temperance candidates were not [ successful. Polling was on the Parliamentary r franchise, but the voting in general was not heavy. One Hotel Only In the Remuera district, the only hotel concerned is on the eastern side of Broadway, at Newmarket, the hotels on the opposite side being in the Auckland East electorate. Provision was made for 13 polling places in the district, and 'only about 2000 people out of a roll number of over 22,000 voted. It was the first election in Remuera since 1936. as in 1939 the nominees equalled the number of seats.
