VEGETARIAN MILER
LIFE ON PACIFIC ISLAND COSTS LITTLE TO KEEP HIM (0.C.) SYDNEY, March 10. George Campbell, holder of the Australian mile record, who is now with the R.A.A.F. on a Pacific island, ran a mile in 4min 20sec on a hard sand track, winning the championship of the island against interState, and American representatives. ; Before joining the services, Campbell grew his own spinach, carrots, corn and -.other vegetables. Often he would take some .pepper and salt into the-garden and eat his meal as he picked it. ■> ■ On the island he is still a vegetarian. / "It; costs the R.A.A.F. little to keep me," he says, in a letter to a friend. "I have not eaten in the mess for some time. With the natives, I go out into the jungle and help myself toi bananas, coconuts, papaws, mangoes, pineapples, oranges and lemons. It is tough work getting them, but it is worth it, as I am in the best of health."
