TRANSACTIONS LAST YEAR

A summary of transactions under exchange control for the calendar year ended December 31 last Is contained in the statistical summary .of the Reserve Bank just issued. Receipts totalled £104,478.000 against £94,013,000 in 1942, while payments aggregated £101,306,000 compared with £80,002,000 in the previous year.

Principal receipts were exports, £76.656,000 (£82,316,000 in 1042), interest, dividends, legacies, etc., £4,778,000 (£4,230.000), and trade debts due in New Zealand, including overseas earnings of New Zealand firms, £3,135,000 (£3,506,000). An item showing a large increase is receipts on account of American authorities and personnel, this amount having risen from £2,969,000 in 1942 to £14,329,000 last year.

Among payments the main items, with, the 1942 figures in parentheses, were:— Imports, £28,660,000 (£34,487,000); interest, dividend's, legacies, etc., £3,808,000 (£3,715.000); trade debts, £2,294,000 (£2,670,000); Government debt and other services, including payments in respect of imports, £00,008,000 (£34,718,000); local body services, £2,375,000 (£1,771,000).
