RACEHORSE TRANSPORT

ALL VEHICLES RESTRICTED

(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter)

WELLINGTON, this day

A statement that he had reluctantly taken steps to prevent the transport of racehorses to sales or race meetings, even by private car or trailer, where the road travel exceeded 30 miles, was made to-day by the Minister of Transport, Mr. O'Brien.

"Owing to che deterioration in the petrol position, I was compelled recently to forbid the carriage of racehorses by commercial operators for this distance," said the Minister. "I now find that many owners are arranging for the horses to be conveyed by private car and trailer. The fairest way to all parties is to make the restriction applicable irrespective of whether the conveyance is by public carrier or not, arid a warrant is being issued for that purpose.

"Owners are warned that traffic inspectors have been advised to be on the watch for the purpose of enforcing the restriction, as it is not considered in the interests of the country and the war effort at the present time for petrol and tyres to be used for such purposes as the long-distance conveyance of racehorses. The restriction will include any journey where more than 30 miles of road travel is involved, and the wording of the order is such as to anticipate and forbid any efforts to circumvent the restriction by relaying the horses foV parts of the journey."
