FIRE AT LIME WORKS
DAMAGE TO MACHINERY
SERIOUS LOSS TO FARMERS
(0.C.)
WHANGAREI, this day
Fire yesterday afternoon caused considerable damage to the lime works at Double Crossing, near kaitaia. The manager, Mr. J. D. Bellingham, is still unable to assess the amount of the loss, but the whole mechanical part of the mill is out of action and will not operate for some time. The cause of the fire, which originated in the engine room, is not known.
Using buckets and stirrup pumps, members of the Kaitaia Volunteer Fire Brigade, at great personal risk, prevented the flames from spreading to the storeroom. With a shortage of fertiliser and the consequently greatly increased demand for lime, the temporary loss of production from one of the largest units in Northland is a serious matter for the farming community.
