ELECTRICAL STORM
TE AROHA DISTRICT FLOODS (0.C.) TE AROHA, this day. Damage to electric power transformers and fuses occurred in Te Aroha district on Sunday night during a local but unusually heavy thunderstorm. A direct hit by lightning at Mangaiti broke off two line insulators, and liquid fuses and transformers were damaged at Kereone, Springdale and Hungahunga. Streams from Te Aroha, Mountain ran dangerously high, leaving their banks at times and strewing paddocks and sections with logs brought down by a landslide high up in the hills. The climax came when logs caught on trees near the borough's pumping station, banking up the water, which flooded the station and plant. Damage to the town's water supply was, however, slight and the electrical generator was not damaged.
