LATIN AND LAW

A motion has been put before the Council of the New Zealand Law Society that Latin be made an optional subject in the legal exams. Although Latin has been dropped as a compulsory subject by every other profession, it is still necessary for a law student to struggle through in order to become a barrister or solicitor. In order to obtain a pass at the local university the professor states every student must have at least a minimum of one year post matric. work in Latin. Even then he must devote nearly all his study to Latin. The student who has matriculated and gone straight to university stands practically no chance of gaining a pass. If it is not possible to abandon Latin as a compulsory subject for the legal exams, and substitute English, or even philosophy, in its place, might it be suggested that a lower standard be accepted from legal students than from the art students. SECOND YEAR AT LATIN.
