PRISON PREFERRED
TO WORK AT PENROSE
AX APPELLANT'S ATTITUDE
"I definitely won't go. I will go up to Mount Eden before I go," declared Thomas Arthur Lord, labourer, when he appeared before the Auckland Industrial Manpower Committee this morning and appealed against his direction to employment with Reid (N.Z.) Rubber Mills, Limited. The appellant, who said ho was a driver and not a labourer, objected to going to Penrose on the ground that the work would be detrimental to his health.
The chairman, Mr. J. O. Liddell, pointed out that the committee had merely to come to a decision in regard to the appeal. If the appellant said he would not do the work he put himself in the manpower officer's handstand, under the regulations, certain penalties were provided to deal with refusals to work. The board dismissed the appeal.
