THE SINGLES TITLE 106 PLAYERS QUALIFY (P.A.) DUNEDIN, Thursday. Eighteen two-lifers and 54 other competitors with one life qualified in the second day's play of the New Zealand bowling championship singles. This leaves 10G players to enter the post-section play, of whom 35 have two lives.

No past singles champions are among the two-lifers from to-day's play in the singles, but J. S. Anchor (Hamilton), who is an ex-pairs champion, went through unbeaten. He was given his hardest grime by-A. Jackson (North End, Invercargill), the score being 19—17. This was the only game Jackson lost. S. Vella (Onehunga) was one of the most spectacular players among the onelifers and helped to eliminate the former pairs champion, C. E. Tyrrell (Roslyn). The winning pair at the British Empire Games in 1935. L. L. Macey and W. Denison (Auckland), both met defeat in the singles. One of the early sensations of the day was provided in the pairs competition by the Otago pair J. W. Thomas and W. W. Callender, who defeated the present champions, H. W. Maslin and M. J. Squire (Hawera), 21—20. Maslin and Squire were beaten again, and failed to qualify. W. O'Neill (Runanga), who looks like being prominent in post-section play, was in fine form at West Harbour, where he won five games. W. Gilbert, who will be skippering Kelburn in the fours, also won five games. F. Mayhew (Te Rangi) scored a big win against J. Slater CUickliemarch). 34—7. The most decisive score of the tournament was established when W. W. Morrison (United) won the last game against Stater, 31—0. A Southland player who has been doing well is J. Ure (North End). He displayed impressive form throughout to win each of his games. Several ex-champlons were seen on the Kaikorai green, and to emerge with two lives G. Gray (Kelburn) defeated such well-known players as R. Ha worth (Canterbury), 10—13, and H. C. Clarke (Carlton), I(>— ld. Haworth and Clarke also qualified. E. W. Taylor (Carlton) defeated J. Veitch (Dunedin) and eliminated him from the competition. G. H. Smith, the promising Kdendale player, beat Macey in the first round and went through with only one loss to A. Young (West End, Auckland) by 21—IB. J. P. Smith (YVanaka) accounted for Donison and was unbeaten until the last round, when J. Lee (Timaru) scored a narrow win, 17— 10, both men qualifying. The seasoned tournament player, S. C. K. Smith (North End, Invercargill), won his first four , games. He beat A. Bcllemin (Christchurch R.S.A.), 35 —5. T. Gray (Kelburn), one of the best-known players in the Dominion, began with a convincing win against A. C. Wilson (Waihopai), and continued his winning fun until G. H. Fraser stopped him in the fifth round by a margin of two points. Among the one-lifers is the veteran Adey (Chrislchurch), who beat J. C. Rigby (Dunodin), an ex-New Zealand singles champion, 22—12. The Hutt player, McDonald, beat J. A, James (Owaka) by the record margin of 37—4. Two unbeaten combinations were A. W. Alioo and H. C. Alloo (Owaka) and the promising Tainui pair, W. Edgar and W. F, Mills. The weather was dull throughout the day, but the greens were all in very fair condition. Gusty winds were troublesome on some greens. The two-lifers from to-day's play are:—W.
