RECOGNITION OF SERVICES

Tribute to the services performed by Sir R. Heaton Rhodes on behalf of the Red Cross Society was paid by speakers at a social gathering held in his honour at the headquarters of the Auckland centre of the society this morning. Canon 11. G. Coats, president of the centre, presided, and associated with him on the platform were the Mayor, Mr. Allum, who is vice-president, Mr. G. T. Paterson, chairman, and Mrs. Paterson, and Mr. A. A. Harker, secretary.

In extending a welcome to Sir Heaton, Canon Coats said that, as Sir Heaton was visiting Auckland in connection with the jubilee celebrations of the Order of St. John, the opportunity was taken to express to him the appreciation of the Red Cross Society, of which he ,was Dominion president, for what he had done on behalf of the society. Despite his years, Sir Heaton continued to take an interest in the work of the society and brought to it a wealth of experience. During the whole of his life he had been connected with works of mercy.
