MILK IN SCHOOLS
DISTRIBUTION IN NORTH
RESUMED AFTER YEAR'S BREAK (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. The distribution of a free half pint of milk to the 100 children attending the Whangarei borough, Hikurangi, Kamo and Kauri schools was recommenced to-day after a year's lapse in the service owing to labour shortages in dairies. Delivery to other outlying schools will commence on Monday, and it is expected that with the opening of the new school year the whole scheme, benefiting 28 schools, will be restored.
Prior to May of last year daily bottles were dispatched from Waiotira in the south to Russell in the north, and there was a surprising demand for the milk ration from children in rural areas. The Whangarei Milk in Schools' Committee was the first in New Zealand to arrange for the dispatch of supplies by rail, the charge being the same as that for the carriage of farmers' milk in bulk.
