CRUELTY TO CALVES
TRUCK DRIVER FINED PROSECUTION IN THE NORTH (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. For cruelty to animals in carrying bobby calves in an overcrowded truck at Hukerenui, William Chisholm Dempster, driver, was to-day fined £15 in the Whangarei Magistrate's Court. A traffic inspector said that in a crate 7ft 9in by 6ft 6in were 35 calves, some of which had fallen and were being trampled on. Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M., commented that there had been much justifiable complaint regarding the cartage of bobby calves, and the conditions in the present case appeared very bad. Realising, that there were technical difficulties against charging employers, Mr. Ferner considered that the penalty in such cases, which would be more costly in future, should fall more evenly between the driver and truck owner.
