RIVERS SWOLLEN
RESULT OF HEAVY RAIN SLIPS IN WANGANUI ABBA WANGANUI, Thursday. Rivers and streams in the Wanganui district are swollen following the heaviest rainfall within a short period this year. The total for 10 hours in the city and suburban area was 1.34 in. The rain brought relief to pastures and gardens in certain areas badly in need of moisture. ■A heavy rainstorm was experienced late yesterday in back-country districts, and the Wanganui River is in moderate flood to-day. Largerquantities of driftwood than usual are coming down the river, but the swift current, accentuated by the ebb of a high spring tide, did not deter many flat-bottomed boats from putting out to reap a welcome harvest of fuel. Minor flooding and slips have occurred on back-country roads, the most serious being just above Jerusalem, 44 miles from Wanganui, where the river road from the city to Pipiriki was blocked by an extensive slip. Meantime settlers north of Jerusalem have no access to Wanganui. .
