BOWLING OPENINGS

PLANS FOR SATURDAY

ONEHUNGA'S JORDAN PINS

(By TRUNDLER)

The usual equinoctial gales disappointed the many bowlers who were looking forward to the official opening of tho the PuSknH P° st l? on ed till October 2, and th„ kohe °P oni ng until October 9 h™,i e annua l reunion of ex-Otasto bowlers was cancelled. This was rather surprising in view of the partiality of Cross and Vella for a drive whenever there appears to be an opening, but they soon came at it with their favourite shot to score a solid win, the card reading, with only 19 ends played: H. Thompson, L. Jones, R. Cross, S. Vella (Onehunga) 22, v. C. Buchan, H. S. Harvey, J. Davenport, 10 Wadsworth (Mangere), challengers, Both clubs are to open on Saturday, so this game was of particular importance, as the winners do not have to face another challenge, and are at liberty to wear Mr. Jordan's medals at their club's opening ceremony. In fact, this applies to all the challenge medals, which the holders are supposed to wear at all bowling matches during the season, and not to stow them away. The position is different in the Hadwin Pins, which changed hands last Saturday, the game resulting: C. S. Cave, P. C. H. Cowan H. H. Parrant, J. H. Baker (Mount Eden), challengers, 21, v. W. W. Graham, D. C. Anderson, L. Lewis, M. Fisher (Epsom) 11. In their case they are quite prepared to play again next Saturday, and they may expect a rick from Remuera, the next club on the list. If the challengers win they would probably like to play one more game, as they are free until October 16, but all the other clubs on the list are opening before that date.

Another Champion for Dunedin Auckland bowlers will be interested to learn that there will be still another Dominion champion to represent this centre at the national tournament next January. He is H. Wilson, formerly of Christchurch, who won the Dominion rinks for Linwood in 1934 and 1938, each time in Dunedin. Wilson attended one of the centre finals last autumn, accompanied by Mrs. Wilson, and they both assured me that, they would soon be residing in Auckland, but until quite recently it had not transpired whether he would play for his old club or for an Auckland club. However, this is now settled, for he has joined Mount Eden, and will be accompanied to Dunedin by two of that club's members and a Linwood member. This is a fairly common procedure, and is officially permitted in No. 17 of the association's conditions. Not only so, but the odd man may now play in the pairs also, according to a decision in 1940. Mount Eden will be well represented, for there will also be a rink in charge of S. R. Shirriffs, who had nominated for the cancelled tournament of 1942.

Altogether it seems assured that Auckland will have 19 rinks in Dunedin, and probably 20 or 21, a record for Auckland or any centre.
