CENTRAL WHARF

NORTHCOTE AND BIRKENHEAD CONFERENCE NEXT WEEK A conference of the Birkenhead and Northcote Borough Councils will take place next Tuesday to consider the proposal for a central wharf for Northcote and Birkenhead at Little Shoal Bay.

The Mayor of Northcote, Mr. E. C. Fowler, said to-day that the Northcote Borough Council strongly supported the project as being necessary for the improvement of vehicular and passenger transport and the relief of congestion on the Devonport route, and also as an adjunct to the harbour bridge.

An' earlier report made it appear as if the Northcote Council did not favour the scheme, Mr. Fowler said. It was now possible to call the conference as a reply from the Government relative to the proposals had been received.

tion. RAILWAY SERVANTS RETIREMENT QUESTION (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. A statement to make the position clear in connection with the retirement of railway servants after 40 years' service was issued by the Minister of Railways, Mr. Semple. He said that when Japan came into the war the Cabinet by resolution decided to refuse any retirements unless the application for retirement was accompanied by a doctor's certificate declaring the applicant to be physically unfit. As a result of several deputations from the railway servants of both divisions, this question had been reconsidered, said Mr. Semple. In view of the Pacific situation having somewhat improved, and the fact that some of the railway division which went overseas had returned, it had been decided to relax the restriction on 40 years' retirements. They would not lift it unconditionally, but would relax it.
