UNIVERSITY GRANTS
DISPARITY IN DOMINION CA NTERBURY'S ENDOWMENTS (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. A great disparity in grants from the Consolidated Fund to the universities of the Dominion was the subject of comment by Mr. Clyde Carr (Government, Timaru) in the House of Representatives last night. He said the Auckland University College received £24,105, Victoria College £23,302, and Otago University £37.390, but Canterbury University College grant was only £17,495, though it was the only college which administered the university secondary schools, a School of Art, library and museum. A new development was the establishment of a special department to apply the results of scientific research to industry, said Mr, Carr, and the School of Art would have to be rebuilt. The Minister of Education, Mr. Mason, pointed out that when the provinces were abolished there were large endowments in Canterbury, and it was revenue from these reserves which enabled Canterbury College to manage with smaller grants than the others. The Minister expressed hearty approval of a proposal to institute a course in chemical engineering. He congratulated Canterbury upon its foresight and enterprise, and assured them that he would encourage that effort in every way. ,The size of the grant in no way indicated any lack of sympathy with Canterbury's enterprise.
