Parent? who abandoned a 13t months-old child in a Christchureh ! hotel appeared in the Magistrate's 1 Court charged with abandoning aj child under 14 years in a manner j > likely to cause unnecessary suffer- • ins. Defendants were Albert Henry i Wheeler, aged 34. and Myra .Joyce Wheeler, aged 24, and both pleaded guilty. Wheeler said that his wife was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. He could not secure a house, and hotels and boarding houses refused to have them. The magistrate said it was a cal- \ lous and cruel act. The remarks of 5 Wheeler carried no weight, and the ' magistrate could not think that any normal mother would do such a dreadful thing. 1 Wheeler was sentenced to three I months' imprisonment and his wife ; was admitted to probation for 12 months.
