GOODS EMBARGO
IMPOSED BY RAILWAYS ACUTE WAGON SHORTAGE (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A temporary embargo has had to be placed on goods for carriage by rail in Christchurch owing to the acute shortage of empty wagons. The position is so bad that, with the exception of perishable goods, interIsland freight has had to be refused.
Yesterday the railways had the equivalent of 1000 loaded wagons standing in the yards awaiting discharge, and this morning the figure had increased to 1200. The Department has had to stop cartage of goods to railway goods sheds because no empty wagons are available for loading. The position has been aggravated by the heavy demand for empty wagons for the West Coast mines.
