SOLDIER SPORTSMAN
DEATH FROM INJURIES The death of Flying-Officer Henry St. Aubyn Murray at Whangarei yesterday as the result of injuries suffered when a jeep capsized on Saturday, recalls his exploits on the athletic field. He was New Zealand 440 yards champion hurdler from 1906 to 1910. In the course of these five seasons his best time was 59 4-5s at Basin Reserve, Wellington. That figure had only once previously been bettered —by A. H. Holder, 5S 4-ss, at Auckland in 1897. It was not until H. D. Morgan (Otago) clocked 595, in 1926, that Murray's 59 4-5s was either equalled or improved. Flying-Officer Murray came from a famous Canterbury family of sportsmen. One cousin in H. V. Murray was wingforward in the 1913 All Blacks in California and British Columbia, and the New Zealand international Rugby team which toured Australia in 1914. Another cousin, the late Cecil Murray, was the skipper of the Canterbury XV. which beat the 1921 Springboks by two tries to a potted goal.
