GUARD KILLED
SLIPPED OFF ENGINE WAITARA SHUNTING ACCIDENT (P.A.) NEW-PLYMOUTH, this day. An accident during shunting operations in the Waitara railwaystation yard at 6.30 o'clock this morning resulted in the almost instant death of a guard who was preparing a train for a trip from Waitara to Lepperton with stock wagons. The man killed was Mr. Samuel Victor Kiddie, aged 41, married, with two children. He lived at Waitara. Mr. Kiddie was riding on the left side of the front cowcatcher of the engine, and it is believed he was in the act of crossing over to the opposite side while the engine was in motion, when he slipped and fell in front of the engine, the left wheel of the front bogie of which passed over the middle part of his body. The driver and fireman were not aware of anything until they felt a bump. The body was dragged for about 68 yards before the engine stopped. Mr. Kiddie had 20 years' service in the Railway Department. He was transferred from Taihape to Waitara.
