CAREER CUT SHORT
NEW ZEALAND WRITER MISS M. CONLAN'S DEATH In the death of Miss Marie Conlan, at a private hospital in Auckland in her 31st year, New Zealand has lost one of its most promising young writers. She was at the stage in her career when her writing was most virile, and had she lived she would surely have won yet greater distinction as a Dominion poet and playwright. The only daughter of. Mr. and Mrs. J. Li. Conlan, of Sharpe Road, Epsom, she was educated .at. the Diocesan High School for Girls arid-took her M.A. degree at the Auckland University College. Her most recent achievement c was the winning of the Dominion-wide radio contest for her series ,of • plays, "There'll Always be an -England." She held a unique position on the staff of Station IZB, being a special script writer, and the fairy-tale feature, "Long, Long Ago," includes some of her stories. Miss Conlan was a member of the P.E.N. Club, which requires literary achievements before membership is granted. Both her published work and her private manuscripts justified this honour.
