GENERAL MONTGOMERY ADDRESSES IN BATTLE AREA (Official War Correspondent with N.Z.E.F.) GABES, April 2. The Commander of the Eighth Army, Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Montgomery spent to-day among the New Zealand Forces in the field. Accompanied by Lieu-tenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C., he visited various units and addressed officers and-N.C.O.'s on the operations which drove the enemy from the Mareth Line. Artillery units were addressed close behind their gun positions, Lieutenant-General Montgomery's remarks being punctuated by the noise of our guns and the screech and bursts of enemy shells not far distant.
