AUCKLAND MILK

HEAVY CONSUMPTION SUPPLIES FROM WAIKATO Consumption of milk in Auckland is averaging 26,000 gallons daily, and *of that amount 4000 to 6000 gallons daily are needed for the military forces. A report, presented at a meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council last evening, referred to the co-operation the council had received from the companies and farmers, supplying factories, who had gone to considerable trouble in bringing the milk up to the high standard the council required. Officers of the council had visited the Hauraki Plains and Lower Waikato last week, and had reported that ample supplies of excellent milk were available. It was expected that by the end of next week the effect of the recent rains would be shown by increased production. Meetings of suppliers of the Te Aroha West and Manawaru cheese factories of the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Co., Ltd., have signified their willingness to supply Auckland city with milk over the emergency period caused by the long dry spell. The first milk from Te Aroha West was sent on Thursday night last. Approximately 1000 gallons is being supplied daily from each district from the evening's milking, and is sent to the city by lorry, being pasteurised in Auckland and delivered the following morning. It is understood that the supply is for an indefinite period, and may last through the present, month, as recent rains will not affect the city's local milk supply for some time.
