FAILURE TO REPORT
OFFENDER SENT TO GAOL (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. "We think he is doing everything possible to avoid service," said Senior-Sergeant Henderson in prosecuting in a case in the Whangarei Court to-day against Buddy William McDonald, charged with failing to report to the army office. The police said McDonald denied having registered, and said his father was Scottish, but his mother was of mixed Maori and island blood. He had spent much of his life in his birthplace in Hawaii. The National Service Department ruled that McDonald was liable for service owing to his father's nationality. McDonald failed to notify a change of address, and all correspondence to him was unclaimed. Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M., sentenced McDonald to six weeks' imprisonment with hard labour on the understanding that when McDonald was released from prison he would receive a further demand for service.
