AUCKLAND TAXIS
COMMITTEE ENLARGED MR. B. MARTIN, M.L.C., CHOSEN The appointment of Mr. Bernard Martin, M.L.C., as a member of the Auckland Taxi-cab Control Committee was announced this afternoon by the Minister of Transport, Mr. O'Brien. Mr. O'Brien said that certain proposals had been made to the ownerdrivers concerning the control of the taxi-cab system. There was only a small proportion of the taxi-men in opposition to the control proposals, and he expected that there would be a unanimous agreement reached within a few days. Mr. H. B. Smith, chief clerk of the Transport Department, will arrive in Auckland to-morrow morning to complete details regarding the new control scheme. The roster system, and unified telephones, will be incorporated in the scheme. Mr. O'Brien said that a manager, or managers, would have to be appointed to administer the service, under the control committee. The men had the choice either of continuing to own the telephone system themselves or of turning it over to the control committee.
