TO CARE OF CITY
MEMORIAL UNVEILED
MR. CURTIN'S GESTURE
Following the unveiling of the monument, erected by the Labour movement to the memory of the late Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, P.C., the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, declared open the Garden of Remembrance and the Memorial Park surrounding it "for the use and enjoyment of the people of New Zealand of to-day and all the days to come in the life of this Dominion," and handed it over to the care of the city of Auckland. In accepting the care and control of the national memorial, the Mayor, Mr. Allum, declared that this duty would ever be regarded as a sacred trugt. Later, in a statement, Mr. Fraser expressed his appreciation of the fine work of all associated with the planning, design and construction of the memorial. He expressed his thanks, also, to the civic authorities of Auckland for their willing cooperation and practical assistance. He felt sure, he said, that the permanent attractiveness of a beautiful commemorative resort was assured. . A number of cables were received by the Prime Minister relative to the ceremony. Among them was a warm tribute to the late Mr. Savage from the Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Curtin. "Australia will pause amid the turmoil of war," he cabled, "to recall a great humanitarian, who did so much to bring honour to Australia (his birthplace) and to New Zealand."
