REFORM SOUGHT
Bill Sponsored In India By Progressive Hindus WOMEN'S INHERITANCE RIGHTS Rec. 10 a.m. NEW DELHI, Mar. 28. British officials and Hindus with modern ideas have joined forces in an effort to gain another step in the emancipation of Hindu women. A new bill designed to give women equal inheritance rights is now before the Legislature and is being hotly contested by orthodox Hindus, who are using every argument from the claim that women cannot manage property to the assertion that the bill will break up the centuries-old family system. The Government and its supporters are confident that the bill will be put before the drafting committee. Half a century ago British Liberals and Hindus virtually eradicated the ancient custom of suttee (selfimmolation of a high-caste widow with her deceased husband. More recently the same force legislated against child marriages, which are to-day the exception rather than the rule.
