BRAVERY IN PAR EAST

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Additional awards to New Zealanders on naval service which have been approved by the King were announced this evening by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser. They are as follows: — Distinguished Service Cross. — Temporary Lieutenant Herbert John Bull, R.N.V.R., for bravery in the Far East. British Empire Medal (Military Division).—Assistant Cook Bruce Gaunson Taylor, for bravery and endurance in the Far East. Mentioned in Dispatches.—Temporary Sub-Lieutenant John Alexander Foster, R.N.Z.N.Y.R., for distinguished services in one of His Majesty's ships in a convoy to North Russia.

Lieutenant Bull, who is an Aucklamler, was granted a commission in the volunteer reserve and left New Zealand for service in the Royal Navy in the Far East in October, 1940. After a dramatic escape from the enemy he arrived in New Zealand via Java in April, 1942, and is now serving in the Royal New Zealand Navy. He transferred to the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve in April, 1942. Assistant Cook Taylor entered the Royal New Zealand Navy in May, 1941, for the duration of hostilities, and was reported missing after the fall of Singapore on April 15, 1942. Sub-Lieutenant Foster left New Zealand as a telegraphist on May 1. 1940, for service in the Royal Navy. He was promoted to his present rank in June, 1941.
