GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS

Progress being made in connection with State housing was reviewed yesterday by the Minister of Public Works, Mt Semple, who said that the Completion of 317 partly - built State houses in the Auckland district and the erection of a large number of homes on a block of land at Penrose would be undertaken as soon as the defence works programme permitted. There were approximately 10,000 applicants for State houses in Auckland, and the work would have to be accelerated. The demand for houses was so great that it could be met only by home building on a mass scale. Under the State scheme 15,000 houses had been built in New Zealand, and another 7000 had been financed by the State Advances Corporation.'
