COWS NEAR FRONT

Fresh Milk For Wounded Diggers In War Hospital

PART OP ARMY SECTION N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 1.30 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. Australian patients in Wau military hospital are the only soldiers in New Guinea to receive fresh milk daily. The herd of 34 milking cows is looked after by the army's Animal Husbandry Section. During the battle for Wau aerodrome the herd was scattered but was rounded up without loss as soon as the Japanese were cleared from Bulolo Valley.

JAPANESE RULE

HOW IT WORKS IN MALAYA

Reed. noon. WASHINGTON, Feb. IS. A traveller from Malaya is reported from Chungking as saying that during their first year of occupation the Japanese have arrested 97,000 Chinese in Malaya and Singapore, and they have massacred an undetermined number. They have forced the Chinese industrialists to continue producing rubber, minerals, rice and timber at fixed low rates. They successfully raised a loan of 50,000,000 dollars, to which the Malayan princes and Chinese millionaires contributed obediently. The Japanese now rule Malaya directly, instead of by puppets. All former Japanese dentists and barbers in Singapore are now holding important official positions. The Japanese have instituted a "mutual guarantee" system throughout Malaya, by which 30 families are formed into a "guarantee unit." If any member of any unit displeases the Japanese all members of all families are executed.
