PRISON SENTENCES
OFFENCES OF DISHONESTY
Two young Maoris came before Mr. Justice Callan for sentence today for offences of dishonesty.
James Baker, aged 18 years, appeared in military uniform, and naa no excuse to of*er for having broken and entered a shop in Kaikohe ana stolen goods. , _ , , , His Honor recalled that Baker had been fined £4 in July for a theft of shoes. This time, on New Years Eve, he broke into a shop and stole cigarettes, matches, trousers, a money belt, a pair of men s shoes ana a pair of women's shoes. He saia ne had been drinking. "Like many young men, white ana brown, .he is growing up with no respect for the property of others ana no understanding of the virtue of honesty," added his Honor, m committing Baker to a Borstal institute for two years. Mackie Raniera, aged 22, who required the assistance of sticks for walking, had admitted five charges of forgery and uttering of social security payment warrants. His Honor said Raniera had been injured in a collision between a motor vehicle he was driving and a cyclist, the latter being killed, ana Raniera had stood trial for negligent driving causing death and had been put on probation. He was granted a social security benefit of £1 a week, and had altered the amount on the pay warrant on five occasions, increasing it from £1 to £10 on one occasion and £2 to £4 on another. He could not get further probation, and would be committed for reformatiDry detention for a period not exceeding 12 months.
