FRIDAY CLOSING HOUR
KARANGAHAPE ROAD SHOPS
Shops in Karangahape Road will continue to close at 6 p.m. on Fridays it was decided yesterday at a special meeting of the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Society. This will meet the needs of essential industry workers and others with little time for shopping. The meeting was held because the large drapery shops in Queen Street now close at 5.30 on Fridays, but in reply to a question, Mr. R. M. Barker, secretary of the retail drapery trade organisation, told the meeting that Queen Street houses were closing earlier under an arrangement with the union by which employees took 40 minutes for lunch on Fridays, instead of an hour. As business was brisk at the lunch hour., compared with after 5.30 p.m., this' was a distinct gain, but conditions in Karangahape Road were different. As the shops there catered extensively for workers in essential industries it was to everyone's advantage to retain the last half hour.
