FINANCE OF E.P.S.
LOCAL, BODIES' POSITION
The Mayor and Chief Warden, Mr. Allum, said yesterday that he was aware that a financial statement prepared by the honorary treasurer, Mr. Ashby, in connection with E.P.S. operations, had been criticised at a meeting of the Suburban Local Bodies' Association. A complete audited statement would be available at the end of the financial year, and in the meantime any authorised person could examine the accounts. As soon as the Government announced relaxation of civil defence, all new major works were cancelled until further notice.
The One Tree Hill Borough Council, at a meeting last evening, decided to request the E.P.S. organisation to supply complete figures of its expenditure in certain particulars. The Devonport Borough Council last evening received advice from the E.P.S. fire unit that the wages of permanent brigadesmen engaged for the duration of the war would be subsidised by two-thirds as from December 1 last by the National Service Department. As it was stated that two men appointed by the Dominion Fire Controller were required for the protection of Government property only, it was decided to make a protest to the National Service Department.
