MIDNIGHT CHASE

'BUDDY'S' STOLEN CAR

SWIMMERS' MISSING CLOTHES

MELBOURNE, February 10. When an Allied soldier asked the driver of a taxi he had hired: "What's your hurry, Buddy?" after a sudden acceleration of speed, he received the amazing reply: "You'll soon know. The cops are on our trail and this is a pinched car." After an exciting chase, the stolen car was run to earth outside St. Kilda police station. , Shortly after 10 p.m., Mr. Eric Armstrong, of Windsor, pulled up outside a Collins Street parking area. A man whom he took to be the parking attendant approached and Mr. Armstrong handed his car over to him. The man then drove down town and set up as a hire car driver. Three soldiers and two women engaged him to drive them to Half Moon Bay, a seaside resort about 15 miles from the city, for a late swim. They reached there about 11 p.m. and the passengers changed into swimming costumes and left their clothes in the car. They instructed the driver to wait for them. While he was waiting, an Allied soldier approached and asked to be driven to the city. They set off, with the clothes of the previous passengers still in the back of the car. When they reached St. Kilda the car was recognised by a police patrol as having been reported stolen. The driver realised that he had been recognised and gave the patrol a solid chase before they caught him. After he had been arrested and charged with larceny and illegally using a car, the patrol went to Half Moon Bay to return the clothes to the stranded swimmers, who had managed to telephone an appeal for assistance. It was 2 a.m. before the patrol reached them.
