THE HOUSE SHORTAGE
Mr. Pickering has referred to the loss the Government suffered in the 'twenties by lending on inflated values. This loss was also suffered by thousands of private moneylenders, too, and could have been avoided had the then Government gone in for a reasonable inflation policy. For this and their failure to grapple with the slump they were thrown out of office, but it was a case of out of the frying pan into the fire. A terrible legacy awaits some future Government. These State houses cost quite £1000 each without the land, and they are framed mostly with sap rimu, a timber I would not put into a fowlhouse. In the meantime the house shortage is tragic. They have succeeded in killing the small builders, as they intend to kill all small businesses. With what result. «No houses, lemons and oranges scarce, and at famine prices. Fruit and vegetables like eating gold. OLD AUCKLAND BUILDER.
