WOMEN PROTEST
HIGH PRICE OF FOOD
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. More than 200 women met at Lower Hutt to-day to express tVieir opinions on high prices of essential foods. They spoke forcibly about prices and dumping. One resolution requested that, m the event of any glut of commodities, immediate steps be taken to dispose of the surplus to various institutions, and that it be a penal offence to waste or destroy edible commodities fit for human consumption.
There was general agreement with a proposal that women should be given representation in the direction of the Internal Marketing organisation. A resolution asked that suitable women be appointed to all boards regulating prices and supplies of foodstuffs, household commodities and clothing. The meeting urged the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, and the Minister of Marketing, Mr. Barclay, to reduce the expensive gap between producer and consumer "by eliminating the present duplication of the Internal Marketing Department and wholesale auctioneering firms." It also demanded improved methods in the collection and distribution of food, thus assisting to eliminate waste and shortage of supplies.
