BETTER FACILITIES

TRAMWAYMEN'S REQUEST

Men at the Gaunt Street tram, depot.have to eat their meals in a-drying-room ,in which. hang clothes of depot workers, and which also has no ventilation, stated members of a deputation from the Tramway Union to the Auckland Transport Board this morning. They requested reading and rest rooms for the male employees at the depots, particularly at Gaunt Street.

The men's accommodation had been reduced, it was stated, owing to a rest-room having been provided for the women conductors. The deputation emphasised that it did not object to this, but considered the men should also have better accommodation. Some men preferred to sit in the street to eat their meals rather than -in the drying-room. It was agreed that added accommodation would be needed, only as long: as women were employed by the board.

The board decided to ask for a report from the works committee. A second request by the deputation was that male employees of the Transport Board, who had been conscripted into other industries, should be treated in.the.same manner as men conscripted into the army and allowed to retain their passes.

The board gftve its assurance that it would consider the matter.
